VØID NULL / HOW WE BUILD GAMES

HOW WE
BUILD GAMES.

We’re building Project GZ by working through the game design, art and code together. Here’s how we approach the work.

Try the idea in a prototype

A prototype should help us find out whether an idea is fun, whether the rules make sense and what needs changing. We use what we learn to decide what to build next.

Art made by people

People will create Project GZ’s concepts, characters, environments, animation, finished assets and promotional art. We don’t use generative AI in that work, including images for an artist to repaint.

The artists making the work help decide its direction and are credited for it.

The visual development role

Code still needs checking

We use AI to help write code, investigate problems, build prototypes and handle some studio tasks. We still need to understand and check the results.

Before a release, we need to understand the changes, check that they do what we intended, run automated tests and try the experience ourselves. Tests should cover failures too. We also need to play the game to know how it feels.

Who makes the decisions

Mel currently leads the studio and is responsible for what it releases, including work made with AI assistance. As the team grows, we’ll share the work and decisions with the people doing it.

The Signal’s website experiment includes AI-generated visuals, including its rank glyphs. Those are website assets, not Project GZ game art.
